Copywriting - nothing at all to do with owning the rights to a book or brand. Not much to do with photocopiers. And absolutely NOT copying what someone else has written! So – what is copywriting? Well, the word derives from the Latin copia meaning ‘a large amount’ (as in ‘copious’) plus, of course, the more obvious writing. So as a copywriter, I write large amounts of text. Not everyone would share my enthusiasm on this, but for me it’s a wonderful way to spend each day! Although we copywriters do not constitute one of the better known professions, our work is to be found all around you. We produce the written content for press releases, advertorial, direct mail, sales letters, newsletters, advertisements and a myriad of other media. Each time you read a well-produced brochure for your next holiday, a leaflet explaining clearly how to get the best service from your local health trust, or perhaps a succinct, easy-to-understand website, you’re likely to be reading the fruits of a copywriter’s labours. Every organisation needs to communicate effectively with its clients, suppliers, staff and others, and anything written is, ideally, crafted by an expert copywriter. And there’s the rub. All too often, people who may for example be highly skilled bankers or business managers, accountants or retailers – but not necessarily so adept at writing - set about penning their own materials. This can easily result in badly written communications that confuse and irritate the reader or may simply not be read. The trouble is we’re all taught to read and write from an early age, so perhaps we expect that if we’re fortunate enough to be in business, then we really ought to be able to write about our products and services. But why should we all expect to be experts? I was taught to draw, but I look on the work of my colleagues in the design industry in awe! Few of us would seriously consider extracting our own teeth when we have toothache. We’d visit a dentist. So it is with writing outstanding copy. Whatever your writing project, the simplest, speediest, and most cost-effective means of getting it done well is to hand it to an excellent copywriter. He or she will not only craft clear, clever, effective copy that achieves your business objectives, but will also release you to get on with the job you do best - your own. Convinced? Try out jmhcopy and you will be! I’d be delighted to prove to you the value of an outstanding copywriter. Call 01484 861071 or email today for a FREE consultation. |
